AI’s first useful prompt was a proof of concept. It showed that natural language could unlock practical value from a large language model. But usefulness was not the same as reliability.
Prompt engineering improved instructions. Chaining connected tasks. Loops introduced critique. Agents divided work. Graphs orchestrated complex workflows. Evidence engineering confronted unsupported claims. Governance engineering introduced boundaries and accountability. Reliance engineering asked whether the result was safe to use for the intended decision.
The history of AI engineering is not only a story of growing capability. It is also a growing obligation to verify, govern and audit what that capability produces.
